What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise system to develop strength, stretch, stability, and stamina. It uses body weight as resistance on the mat and springs for resistance on the apparatus. It uses a variety of apparatus depending on the individual’s needs.

According to Joseph Pilates’ protege Romana Kryzanowska, “You can say what Pilates is in these words: stretch with strength and control. And the control part is the most important because it makes you use your mind.”

“If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.”

— Joseph Pilates

Why choose St. Pete Pilates?

At St. Pete Pilates we have a classical, integrative, systematic approach to movement. We utilize the various apparatus designed by Joseph Pilates to aid the client in developing a uniform, balanced body; to correct posture; and to rid the body of compensatory weaknesses that contribute to chronic pain and injuries.

Why is classical important?

To get the benefits of Pilates, you need to actually be doing Pilates. Unfortunately, many studios today use equipment like TRX, barre, and bosu, which though they might be fun to workout on, are not equipment designed by Joseph Pilates.

Mat and reformer have an order. Joseph Pilates had an order to mat and reformer in order to properly warm up the body to prepare it for the next exercise.

Classical Pilates utilizes all the apparatus. The various apparatus are designed to lengthen, lift, open, strengthen, and stretch the body so you can better perform the mat and reformer work as well as your everyday activities.

Classical Pilates instructors go through rigorous training. Through training and 600+ hours of apprenticeship they learn which exercise on which apparatus is right for you so you can progress and get stronger.
